COMPUTER DONATION

Lagos, Nigeria (CNN)Sharon Okpoe has lived her entire 17 years in Makoko—known as the world’s largest “floating slum”—built on a lagoon in Lagos, Nigeria.
Rickety shacks stand on stilts in the polluted water. Canoes are required transportation through the maze of narrow canals. Okpoe’s father is a fisherman, and her mother sells smoked fish, eking out a living on the fringes of Africa’s largest city.
Lagos has a thriving economy built on oil, finance and manufacturing. And the city is now considered Nigeria’s Silicon Valley, with Facebook and Google opening offices there earlier this year.
Yet it’s estimated that as many as two-thirds of the city’s 21 million residents live in slums that lack reliable electricity, clean water and sanitation.

HELP US INTRODUCE MORE GIRLS TO COMPUTER SCIENCE:

  1. Computer science is foundational to many fields, but not enough girls are choosing to study it. Computer science is about making a difference in the world, creating new things, and helping others. It’ll help you succeed, whether you want to be a doctor, a lawyer, a journalist, or even the next President.
  2. Computational thinking helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity. And technology is transforming every industry on the planet. Students today should learn how to create technology, not just use it. By starting early, they’ll have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.
  3. Women who try AP Computer Science in high school are ten times more likely to major in it in college, but females currently only make up 25% of high school CS classroom, and those ratios don’t change in the workforce! Only 26% of software professionals are women. Help us introduce more girls to computer science. “Every girl deserves to take part in creating the technology that will change our world, and change who runs it,” said Malala Yousafzal, Nobel Peace Prize winner.
  4. An Hour of Code™ across schools is a great place to start addressing the diversity gap and introducing computer science to more girls in the engaging and empowering way! But there is challenge of availability of computer labs.

Papas Land Family Educational Advancement International Foundation Inc. is a Maryland-registered 501c3 organization operating in the Metro DC area and in Ondo City, Nigeria. This request is in support of our efforts to help introduce more girls to computer science. That is why we are asking you to donate $50 toward the purchase of computers. We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully forming a partnership to serve some more.
